| - | Where did ya come from? | + | Born in a little town butting up against the edge of Portland and assigned a different name and gender, Mae grew up being taught the virtues of intolerance and bigotry. She was a very introverted individual, and had few friends outside of her tight knit extended family. Most of the only outsider opinions she was exposed to growing up came from her aunt, Delilah McCarty. Delilah would make little potions or write little spells for a young Mae that gave her a sense of wonder otherwise only fulfilled with Christianity. She’s never realized it, but Delilah was doing real magick, she was a witch. Of course, as she grew older her parents began discouraging her from spending time with her aunt, and what may have been a promising mentor figure in her life grew ever-more distant. |
| - | Where did ya go? | + | In her adult life, Mae moved to Portland and found a desk job at a police station. She managed the city’s more trivial issues mostly. Noise complaints, domestic disputes, and thinly veiled racism. She was, undeniably, a cog in the machine of systemic oppression. Whether she realized it or not, this role, combined with a family culture that stifled her inner-self, were slowly killing her. |
| + | Day after day, she took the rainy walk from her apartment to her job. More and more frequently, walking along that overpass, she would think about ending it all. One day, she tried. | ||
| + | She stepped onto the ledge, and a stranger called out to her. “Oh, | ||
| + | She had intended to fall into oncoming traffic, but as she hurtled downwards the street only seemed further and further away. Everything grew more and more distant | ||
| + | The woman from the bridge was beside her now, watching the sight with her a bit disdainfully. “Seriously? That’s what it took?” She shook her head, and looked Mae in the eyes. They were the same eyes she’d avoid meeting in the mirror each morning, but clearer, more opened. “Guess you should’ve jumped sooner. ‘Course, now you’re gonna die.” The cosmic wheel slowed to a stop. The distance between things was growing shorter. Earth was growing on her horizon now at impossible speed. Her lookalike smirked, and drew nearer, grabbing the wrist of a dumbfounded Mae. “Nah, fuck that. I’m not letting 25 years go to waste.” | ||
| + | The busy Portland street appeared beneath her feet. She was falling off the bridge again. She felt a deep and profound regret, ostensibly too late but… The other Mae was standing above her now, on the bridge, holding onto her wrist. She dangled above her death and felt more fragile than she ever had before. When she looked back up to thank the stranger with her eyes, there was someone else there. | ||
| + | |||
| + | |||
| + | A man, about her age, a little portly, wearing a leather cap and jacket over a t-shirt branded with some metal band. He pulled her back up onto the bridge with some deal of exertion. | ||
| + | “Woah dude! That was too close! Hey… Stay with me, ok? You’re not going crazy. I’m Poe, and-” | ||
| + | That baffling introduction was interrupted by the sudden appearance of an older woman with wild hair. | ||
| + | “Hands off, Libertine. We lay claim to him.” The woman raised an empty hand in an unmistakably threatening gesture, a sense of wild power emanating from her presence. | ||
| + | Mae backed away, but in what she felt was an incredible show of bravery, Poe held his ground. “Nah, I think that’s his choice.” | ||
| + | “His blood has already decided.” Insisted the woman Mae would later learn was named Medea. | ||
| + | What happened next was impossible. A volley of energies and changing things that Mae only half glimpsed as she vomited over the side of the bridge. Her senses were so much clearer now, it was all so overwhelming. Before she realized it, Poe was already pulling her into a cab. | ||
| + | Back at his place, she learned that Poe was a member of the 'Free Council', | ||
| + | She never went back to work. She never even went home to get her things. The person who had jumped off that bridge was dead. Her new name was Maestitius, and she was in charge of her own Fate at last. | ||
| + | She spent a lot of time in Portland, and a lot of time with Poe. They got real close, and he introduced her to some other Libertines that passed through their part of town. She got real close with a lot of them too. She learned she had a bad habit of burning bridges. That habit got her into a fight with Poe. She burnt that bridge too. Whoops. | ||
| + | She was effectively homeless at that point. She’d realized by now the woman she met on the bridge was somehow her. These days she looked a lot more like her savior, and as if moving the goalpost, everytime they met in her dreams that woman changed too. Dyed hair, piercings, even more of that attitude. Now she was giving advice though. Telling her to go to protests, do some weed, go to clubs. She was hesitant, at first. Soon those things would become normal, and the advice would get more extreme. Start the protest, do completely unfamiliar drugs, sell her body. Again she resisted, for a time. That became normal too. | ||
| + | By the time the George Floyd protests began, Mae was fully invested in being a revolutionary. That was a moment for real change. The momentum of the nation was shifting, and she was more than happy to play her part. Somewhere in the early days of that movement she was pulled into a daydream, or perhaps a vision. | ||
| + | She blinked, and the handle of her protest sign was one of the bars of her cell. Her fellow protestors were the unruly men flowing through a massive and terrifying prison. Her avatar appeared to taunt her, and let her know that she had designed this place perfectly to capture and control her. That she’d never escape. | ||
| + | It took a few tries to realize that the prisoners were her allies in this scenario. That the cells, the guards, and the warden represented systemic oppression, bigots, and wealthy elites. That, in order to get out, she had to start a riot. Once the smoke had cleared, she was dropped back into a world where she’d done some unfortunate things. A police station was on fire, there was gas on her hands, broken glass in her boots. The guiding voice that was hers from another future hadn’t told her the things that happened there would have real world repercussions. She had to leave Portland after that. She’d painted a target on her back, and the cops knew her face now. Ever since though, she’s dreamed of her city, with that prison in the background. She can go to it even now, a place in her mind. | ||
| + | She made her way East, hitchhiking. Tried out a few cities, but her dreams tells her she’s gotta go somewhere that needs her. These days, her dream-self carries a weapon, too. That’s why she’s in Austin. | ||
